It’s easy to be grateful when it’s t-shirt weather in November!

I often get asked about what are the most important gratitude habits to cultivate and in a book of 30 days of gratitude habits, it’s a challenge to pick only a few. What I’ve realized is that if you can master a few simply daily gratitude habits, then it becomes much easier to live with an attitude of gratitude most of the time.

1. Wake up with gratitude. Every morning, simply wake up and give thanks for another day. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. Wayne Dyer: ‘Without exception, begin every day of your life with gratitude. As you look in the mirror, say, “Thank you, God, for life, for my body, for my family and loved ones, for this day, and for the opportunity to be of service. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

2. Gratitude Journal. Every evening, just before you turn off the lights, write in your gratitude journal. In the past, I have suggested using a tablet or your phone to do this, but now I prefer using a pen and paper. There is something different about the physical action of writing. Write down three (or more) specific things you are grateful for. And at least one gratitude intention for something you are creating in your life, in the present tense. For example, I am truly grateful to be living in Annecy, France with my family.

3. Give thanks before eating. Take a moment before you eat to give thanks for the food on your plate. Think about the farmer who grew the food, the distribution network that brought it to your grocery store and the person who prepared it. This action of gratitude is not only a great gratitude habit but it’s also great for digestion, as it gives your digestive tract a moment to prepare for digestion with increased saliva and stomach acid production.
