6 Grateful Ways to Deal With Life’s Challenges
Even when we wake up with gratitude every day, there are always challenges that come up. It’s the way in which we choose to deal with these challenges that determines the outcome. What I’ve learned over the years is that there are many ways to deal with life’s challenges. Using gratitude as a tool to get through difficult times is what I’m going to share with you in this post.
6 Grateful Ways to Deal With Life’s Challenges
Start each day with a grateful heart.
This is such a cliché yet it’s truly helpful, even during the darkest of times. We have the choice to wake up with gratitude for the gift of another day. When times are really, really tough, sometimes it might seem as though this new day isn’t a gift. This is the time to seek professional help. If it’s too hard to find gratitude when you wake up in the morning, it’s best to find proper support and guidance to help you move forward.
See if you can find gratitude in the situation.
For example, we have been without a bed frame for over a month. It can be pretty frustrating (since we ordered in November before we moved), however I keep reminding myself that at least I have a mattress, pillows, sheets and blankets to keep me warm. My sister has also become really good at finding gratitude no matter what. When she and her family returned from Mexico, their heater was broken. She found gratitude in that they have electric heat in some of the rooms and that they also have a few portable heaters. Also, since they didn’t have any hot water, it gave them an excuse for an unexpected visit to our home for showers and a family lunch. We all found gratitude in our unplanned visit together!
Create a list of everything you have to be grateful for, right now.
When we were getting ready to put in an offer on our home in B.C. we had yet to sell our home in Ontario, and my husband had yet to secure employment. It was a BIG challenge and we were taking a big risk. That morning, I created a list of all of things I was grateful for about our current situation. It included having new carpet upstairs in our home, and what I was grateful for about my husband’s current job. What I’ve found is that when I’m grateful for what we currently have, i.e. our home in Ontario, it’s easier to manifest what we want. In this case it was our home in B.C. and our offer was accepted that night. A week later, our home in Ontario sold firm and my husband got a great job offer.
Ask a friend for perspective.
It can be hard sometimes to find reasons to be grateful when we are deep in a difficult situation. Asking a friend or relative to help us to find perspective can be really helpful. However, I do recommend that when a friend comes to you with a challenging situation, before offering a different perspective, it’s best to listen first. There are times when we just need someone to listen and not any advice on how to shift our energy. What I’ve done is asked for permission to offer advice and a grateful perspective. This allows the friend to choose whether or not they are open to a shift.
Take a deep breath, and say thank you.
There are moments when our blood is boiling or we are full of anxiety and stress. During these specific moments, I recommend stopping to take a few deep belly breaths. Belly breathing helps to shift our body from our sympathetic (fight or flight) to the parasympathetic (rest and digest) system. Once we are no longer in fight or flight, we can say the words thank you over and over, until we have calmed down. This strategy also works with children.
Write a few gratitude cards or emails.
When we focus on gratitude for others in our lives it helps to take the pressure off of the challenges we are facing. For me, when I find that I’m frustrated in business, the first thing I do is write 3 or 4 gratitude cards to my team or my customers. I want to remind myself that I already have so many people to be grateful for in my business. The reason I do this exercise is that the longer we stay in frustration or anxiety, the more difficult it is to manifest what we truly desire.
We all face challenging times in our lives and using gratitude as a strategy to get through it can be really helpful. Gratitude can turn a negative experience into a positive one and it can shift our energy quickly. The more moments in our days where we are grateful, the easier it is to manifest the life of our dreams.
