Have you ever heard of a blessing jar? I saw a version of it posted by Elizabeth Gilbert on Facebook on New Year’s Day and it inspired me to start a project for 2016. At first, I thought about doing it for myself, however I have a solid gratitude journal habit already and it felt like I was doing the same thing twice. So I put the jar in my daughter’s room.
Gratitude Tip: Do you have a gratitude journal? Have you been writing in it regularly? If it’s not a habit that you have been able to stick to, why not make a blessing or gratitude jar? All you need is a jar/container/box and paper and a pen. Place it somewhere central, if you’re using it for the whole family. Once a day, write on a piece of paper what you are grateful for or something fun that happened that day. Encourage your family to do the same.
My daughter is 5 and is just learning how to spell. For the first week, I was writing on the paper for her. This week, she asked if she could write it down herself. We’ve been doing our ‘mercis’ for years together before she goes to sleep. And I was encouraged by the fact that she wanted to write them down herself – even though it’s quite a long process. It’s an amazing exercise in patience for myself. I realized very quickly that she is now taking ownership of her gratitude practice and that she’ll quickly get better at writing if I allow her to do it on her own. She loves folding the paper and putting it into the jar as well.
One neat thing that I chose to do is that I have a notepad of The Secret® Daily Teachings that I have had for years. You’re supposed to read a page a day and tear it off. Yet I never created the habit. Now we are using the other side of the paper to write her ‘mercis’ and I’m reading the messages to her before she writes. It’s a wonderful way for both of us to give thanks and deepen our spirituality before bed. I’m so grateful for my daughter, as she teaches me so much.
What do you do with all of the little papers? It’s suggested that you look back and read all of the on New Year’s Eve. You can save them, burn them, make a little collage, take a photo of them and start all over in the new year. I am excited to see that my daughter has her own tangible gratitude practice now.
