Many of you have created amazing gratitude habits; you’re waking up and giving thanks, taking a moment o say thank you before you eat and writing in your gratitude journal at night. These are all wonderful ways to express gratitude. Are you wondering what comes next? How can we all deepen or improve our gratitude practice?
Gratitude Tip: A daily gratitude practice is something that constantly grows and evolves. Once we’ve been doing the same thing for months or even years, it often feels like we have to add another layer to our practice, in order to remain truly grateful. Or perhaps over time our gratitude practices fade and we need a reminder and a tune up to get back on track.
One of my favorite books to study is Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life – Living the Wisdom of the Tao by Dr. Wayne Dyer. Verse 24 is Living Without Excess and it’s a verse focused on gratitude. In this chapter, Wayne shares his interpretation of the verse from the ancient text, which is the Tao Te Ching. He says that it is our duty to suspend our ego and to seek an attitude of gratitude for the Tao and all of it’s creativity. Everything we have accomplished, everything we have acquired, it all came from the Tao (the Tao can be God, Buddha, Allah, Spirit). The Tao gives without expecting anything in return, it is continuously giving and our role is to give thanks.
In Sunday School yesterday I was sharing the story about how Jesus feeds 5,000. ‘Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them. Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.’ Luke 9:16-17 NIV. The important thing to note is that FIRST, Jesus gave thanks to the Father and then he was able to break 5 loaves and 2 fish to feed the hungry crowd. And when we ask and give thanks BEFORE we receive, God gives to us in abundance – as there were twelve basktfuls that remained. Our daily gratitude practice is the KEY to abundance.
Back to the Tao, every day there is a suggestion on how to Do The Tao Now and for this verse 24th, Wayne encourages us to wake up and give thanks (as many of us already do) and ‘then begin the beautiful day doing something kind for another human being someplace on the planet.’ pg 115. What can we do today to be kind to another?
We can write a thank you card, send an email expressing gratitude, tell our spouse, partner or kids how grateful we are for them, pay for the coffee of the person behind us in the drive through, help our neighbours, donate to our favorite charity – the list is endless. If you need some help, visit the Random Acts of Kindness page for inspiration.
What will you do today to tune up your gratitude practice?
