The first long weekend of the summer is HERE! Here are my top 7 tips to FEEL AMAZING all weekend long.
One glass of water = one glass of alcohol
Staying hydrated is super important to avoid headaches and hangovers! No one wants to wake up on day two of a long weekend feeling like garbage because of the night before. Finish your evening with one large glass of water and you’ll wake up feeling refreshed, instead of parched.
Caution in the sun!
For many people (especially here in Ontario) this weekend will be the first opportunity to catch some rays. Even if you’re not up at the cottage, many people will be out in their gardens or playing with their kids all weekend. Use a natural sunscreen (I like Alba Botanical), cover up when possible and use a hat and sunglasses to protect your head and eyes. Do the same for the little people in your life.
Practice Safe Snacking
It may be tempting to just go for it and splurge on junk food all weekend, but if you’ve just finished the 30 Day Whole Body Detox or a similar program this spring, you may end up unraveling some of the great work you have done. And it probably won’t make you feel that great either. Keep a supply of raw nuts and seeds on hand, as well as freshly popped popcorn (instead of chips) and to satisfy your sweet tooth, trying making a sorbet in your blender (non-alcoholic!) using frozen fruit with a bit of lime or lemon juice and fresh mint. Yummy!
Get some sleep
This could be a challenge if you are away for the weekend with lots of friends and family. A few things to help you sleep while you’re away including bringing your own pillow, wearing a sleep mask and ear plugs, using a dark blanket and thumbtacks as a room darkening shade (if there isn’t one). If you’re at home, simply make sure you are getting your rest while you have a few days off.
Whether you are away or at home, a long weekend is great time to unplug from social media. Take all of photos you like, you can always post them when you get home and create fun photo montages on Instagram to share your experiences. Too tempting to check in on Facebook or Twitter? Remove the apps for the weekend and reinstall them when you return. And leave your laptop at home!
Once you have unplugged, make an effort to truly connect with those around you this weekend. Take the time to really listen and ask questions. Share stories with one another, and learn about each other’s past. Dream big and ask what their life would look like in 5 years. Ask each other, what do you really want in life?
And finally, don’t be afraid to speak up! If someone is getting on your nerves in a group situation, gently take them aside and talk it through, rather than simmer all weekend. Someone’s had too much to drink? Be clear about not getting behind the wheel of any motorized vehicle or water craft. Speaking up could save someone’s life.
Here’s to a safe, fun and healthy first long weekend of the summer!!
