How do we create value for our tribe? How do we even build a tribe in the first place? This is the challenge that most entrepreneurs face and one that I have been working on this myself for years ever since I read Tribes: We Need You To Lead Us by Seth Godin. A few weeks ago I attended the Archangel Summit where I heard Seth Godin speak live and had a brief moment to meet him. However it was not his talk that was focused on building your tribe, it was Jadah Sellner, one of the co-founders of Simple Green Smoothies. She shared some amazing insight on how they have built an incredible tribe in a very short period of time, and I will share her tips with you in today’s blog.
Gratitude Tip: The sense of belonging is an innate human need. We all need to feel as though we are a part of something bigger than ourselves. Creating a movement and attracting your tribe is one of the most difficult parts of being an entrepreneur, yet it’s also the most rewarding when you realize you’ve made a difference for those who follow you.
Jadah is an amazing woman whose heart is on her sleeve. She is authentic and powerful, and an incredible poet and storyteller. I had been following Simple Green Smoothies on Instagram for ages and didn’t know the story of Jadah or her co-founder, Jen Hansard. When I looked up Jadah for the first time I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had already been following her even though I didn’t make the connection. Her time on the Archangel Summit stage was brief but it left us with some amazing nuggets of wisdom.
‘I encounter every lesson in life on purpose,’ says Jadah. She has not had it easy, most successful entrepreneurs have had to overcome major challenges, and she looks at her lessons and learns from them, instead of dwelling on the negative. When talking about building her tribe, she uses LOVE as a metric. Isn’t that powerful? It’s much more appealing then trying to figure out the ROI of social media, that’s for sure. What is also key is that you are looking to attract your tribe, by being authentic to your vision and being true to yourself. People are attracted to authenticity and integrity.
One of the strategies she recommends is adding value where people are hanging out. Where is your community already hanging out? If you’re doing smoothies and juices, you’ll find your peeps in yoga communities, at the gym and other healthy lifestyle places. And these can be virtual places on the internet too! There are so many incredible communities that already exist, figure out how you can be of service.
It’s also much like a dating relationship, you are essentially courting your community. This makes a lot of sense, often we are trying to get people to buy this or sign up for this before we have offered them anything of value for FREE. The most valuable commodity we have today is our wisdom and experience, alongside our personal journey. How much are you giving away for free before coming in for the ask? If you follow Gary Vaynerchuk (another speaker from the Archangel Summit) you know that he preaches the same and gives away so much for FREE, that when he finally goes in for the ask, everyone buys. Jadah & Jen have done the same with their community and their 30 Day Green Smoothie Challenge.
Once you are adding value to your community, are you also engaging with them? They have a ‘no comment left behind’ policy, so that comments are always followed up – they do have a social media team that helps to make that a reality, and Jadah shared that when the comments are personal for her or Jen that they are forwarded directly to them. Christa Realba echoed this same concept during her session on Building Your Business with Social Media at the Lifestyle & Leadership Masterclass this past weekend. Pay attention to who is liking and commenting on what you are posting and engage with them as quickly as possible.
And finally, make sure that your focus is always greater on service, rather than on building. How are you ‘surprising and delighting’ your community? What are you doing to focus on the members of your community and highlighting their stories. What connects a tribe is our shared experiences and our shared stories. As I write this, I think about all of you who have sent me private messages to share how your lives have been impacted via the blog, my book or my live talks. I realize that what I could be better at is sharing the stories from our gratitude tribe on how your gratitude practice has changed your life. If you’re open to sharing your story, simply comment below or reply to this email.
