Make today about simple gratitudeLooks like many of us here in Southern Ontario have had our Easter weekend turned into a 5 day weekend! A combination of freezing rain and icy road conditions have closed most schools in the area. And since our March Break just ended last week, it’s definitely an unexpected gift of extra time at home with our children.

Gratitude Tip: The weather is always out of our control. And when we are blessed with very nasty weather only a few days after the first day of spring, it can be tempting to be frustrated or annoyed about the wrench in our plans. Today, let’s focus on the gifts that come out of today and remember that God’s plan is always right, so no matter how upside-down your day gets, have an open heart and mind that everything is unfolding exactly as it should.

I’ll be straight with you – I wasn’t jumping for joy when I saw that the schools were closed. I felt gratitude for the fact that my child’s safety was most important, however, with this being the busiest time of the year for my business and having several appointments outside of the home today, I was a bit disappointed at first. As I write this post, it’s just as much for me, as it is for you. I realize that some of you may be in the same boat, you run your own business and another day off with the kids so close to the March Break adds an extra dose of challenge to the mix. Since the roads are treacherous, taking them to a play area or even for a play date is not a safe choice.¬†Even those who don’t run their own businesses, may be have to make the choice to drive into the office because the office is open and they are out of vacation days. And I imagine that those working in retail or grocery stores are already on their way to work, driving in dangerous conditions.

How can we shift our energy and focus on gratitude today? And why would we want to focus on gratitude anyhow? We are not responsible for the circumstances but we are responsible for our reaction to them. Gratitude is the easiest place to start when we’re faced with frustration or disappointment. Here’s my list of what I am grateful for this morning (just as much for me as for you!):

  • a roof over our heads
  • central heating
  • food in our fridge and pantry (even though it’s our grocery day lol)
  • a high-speed internet connection
  • my laptop
  • my daughter’s iPad (that she is watching right now)
  • that I don’t HAVE to drive anywhere
  • clean drinking water
  • electricity
  • clean clothes (yoga pants all day baby!)
  • a business that is virtual
  • Skype/Zoom meeting
  • a residual income (makes it easier when I’ve taken a lot of time off this month)
  • no boss to answer to, no vacation days to use up
  • extra time with my daughter and hubby (who is working from home too)
  • Faith that God has a plan and that everything is happening exactly as it is meant to

That’s a start! I feel better already. What about you? What can you add to this list? How are you making the most of today and this unexpected 5 day weekend?
