Making the Most of the Shortest Day of the Year
Today is December 21, and it will be the shortest day of the year in 2016. How will you make the most of this day? For many of us, today is the first day of the holidays. Christmas shopping will be at the top of the list for some and others will be enjoying time with friends and family. Where does your gratitude practice fit in this week?
Gratitude Tip: Slow down and take a moment to remember what this season is about for you. Breathe out stress and tension, and breathe in love, joy and gratitude for this incredible moment in time.
A few reminders for this week:
1.Every time you are waiting in line, create a list of things you are grateful for in your head or on your phone.
2. Greet people with a smile and a kind word or two. Take extra care when you are shopping to look the salespeople and cashiers in the eye. Remember that they are probably working extra long hours to serve you and your family. And thank you to all of you who are working retail this season.
3. Wake up with gratitude. It might not be a white Christmas here in Southern Ontario and some of our kids may be disappointed about this. Start your day with gratitude every day for the gift of being alive and remind your kids to do the same, no matter what the weather on Christmas morning.
4. Take time for yourself. I wrote a longer post about the importance of self-care with some tips on making sure you’re putting yourself first.
5. For those who are experiencing their first Christmas or holiday season without a loved one, I send you much love and kindness for your aching heart. Allow yourself the space to grieve as needed. Honour the person who has passed as best as you can.
And finally, make the most of every day by doing something you love! Going for a walk, playing with the kids, driving around looking at Christmas lights, dancing to Christmas music – have fun and enjoy yourself.
