Our life is a product of our habits, whether we have positive or negative habits is up to us. Having a morning routine and a bedtime routine allows us to create bookends for our day and the best opportunity to practice great habits. Every once in a while however our positive habits become routine or rote and we are no longer getting the same benefits we once did. That’s why it’s essential to shake up our routine every once in a while.
Gratitude Tip: Are you still waking up and giving thanks for the gift of another day? This is one part of my morning routine that I would not change. However what comes next? Are you stuck in a rut of doing the same thing every morning, eating the same breakfast, making the same lunch for the kids? In order to become more present, it’s important to make changes in our daily routine every few months so that we avoid being caught in our very own Groundhog Day.
One simply way to change things up is to change the order in which you are doing things. For me, as the weather gets warmer and school is out for the summer, I have to change the time where I go for my morning walk. By starting my day with my walk, my morning routine has already been changed, even though I am still doing the same things. If your kids are home for the summer with you, a morning routine may be even more challenging. Encourage them to also have a morning routine. I’ve seen some great ideas from other parents who have created a simple list of what each child has to do in the morning to get ready for the day in the summer.
Another idea would be to start a new morning habit. In the spring, I did the 40 day Purpose Driven Life program by Rick Warren. I really enjoyed the focus of this daily program. I have also read Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life by Dr. Wayne Dyer daily, several times over the past few years. It’s the 81 verses of the Tao Te Chin interpreted by Dr. Dyer and it’s a few short pages a day. And two weeks ago, I started the 40 Day Prayer Challenge with a few friends, where we circle our prayers every morning as soon as we wake up.
The same thing can be said of a workout program. If you feel like you are going through the motions of your routine daily, it’s time to shake it up! Try a new sport or activity, or hire a personal trainer. Enter a competition or race so that you have a new goal. Workout with your kids this summer. Move your workout outside or change the time of day that you train.
And finally, how are you ending your day? Can you make some changes at the end of the day to help you improve the quality of your sleep? With the long summer days it can be a challenge to fall asleep and sleep for 7 – 8 hours, depending on your latitude. Check out this previous blog I wrote with some suggestions on how to sleep better. One of the things I did last week was that I finally moved my office out of the bedroom. I didn’t think it was affecting my sleep. Turns out it was affecting my ability to fall asleep. I am falling asleep much more quickly now.
What can you change today to shake up your routine? How can you be more present in your day and not fall into repetition or rote? Which new habit would you like to start?
