This past weekend was the Thanksgiving long weekend here in Canada. And my Facebook timeline was covered in beautiful messages of gratitude and thanks all weekend long. It’s awesome. However, how quickly does the feeling of gratitude wear off once the holiday has ended? Perhaps it lasts a little bit longer since our neighbors to the south have their Thanksgiving holiday 6 weeks from now and we can get caught up in the gratitude of American Thanksgiving as well. The question is, how do we make it last all year round?

Gratitude Tip: Whatever your habits are, they are what creates your life. It’s up to you to decide whether or not your habits are serving you. Gratitude habits can be started or rekindled over the Thanksgiving holiday. The best way to get rid of a habit that is not serving you is to replace it with one that is positive.

On Saturday, I had the opportunity to speak about Gratitude & Leadership at the Lifestyle & Leadership Masterclass event in Toronto. If you read my blog regularly, you know that we do these events on a regular basis. This was the first time I had the opportunity to be one of the keynote speakers. Our other keynote, Christa Realba, did an amazing talk on how to use social media to build your tribe. It was truly a gift to be able to share my own journey of gratitude with those who were at this event. I will share the action steps with you here too!

Simple actions to create new (or restart) gratitude habits:

  1. Wake up everyday and say ‘Thank you for this gift of another day!‘ It’s the easiest way to start your day with gratitude and set the tone for the rest of the day. I like to add, ‘and the opportunity to be of service to others and to make a difference in this world.’ This habit may seem difficult to remember at first, so you can name your morning alarm ‘Give Thanks’ as a reminder of how to start your day (did you know you could do that? how cool!).
  2. Post a sticky note beside your bed that says ‘Something amazingly awesome is going to happen today!’ This is something I learned from Thank and Grow Rich, a new book by Pam Grout (author of the bestselling book, E-Squared). This also puts a smile on your face and ensures that something amazingly awesome happens every day! Trust me, it works!
  3. Gratitude Journal before you go to sleep. This one is easy to do and easy not to do. As I learned from Shawn Achor, author of The Happiness Advantage, write three things that you are grateful for, every night, specific to that day (different every day). And I like to add a 4th gratitude intention that stays the same until it has come into reality. For example, I am truly grateful to be a USANA Diamond Director and to watch 6 of our team members walk across the stage as new Gold Directors in 2017.
  4. Morning blessings. I have been writing in my gratitude journal at night for over 5 years straight. I knew that others wrote in their journal in the morning. After listening to the teachings of Abraham (via Esther Hicks) and reading more about how important it is to start our day with right vibration and intention. Now I write three morning blessings in my gratitude journal before I start my day.

These are all simple to do and simple not to do. Choose one to start with and then add another one. I don’t recommend that you attempt to start all of them on the same day, it’s setting yourself up for failure. Let’s focus on success and choose one at a time.

For those who were at the event live, many of you have sent messages or posted on Facebook or Instagram that you have started (or restarted) your gratitude journals. I am so excited to the gratitude effect  from this weekend and would love to see all of you continue well beyond this holiday season.
