As a few of you did request to learn more about the transition to a gluten-free lifestyle, I will be sharing my top 10 tips over the next few weeks and will summarize with a downloadable PDF when I’ve gone through everything.

My journey to finding out that I was gluten-intolerant started when I first met Dr. Libby Weaver, author of Accidentally Overweight. accidentally overweightDr. Libby hails from New Zealand and was in town to speak. I had heard her once before but her message hadn’t really sunk in.  I was very fortunate to have a few minutes of her time and she suggested that I try a gluten-free diet for a month, based on some symptoms I had with my digestion. I didn’t really think they were anything to worry about, just some discomfort, but she assured me that it was possible that gluten and wheat could be the problem.  This had been suggested a few times before but I really resisted.  Note – the more you are resisting a change, the more likely you should give it a try. Finally it sunk in and this was the inspiration for the 28 Day Total Body Detox program, which was created in collaboration with a Holistic Nutritionist, Laura Townsend and with some guidance from a Naturopathic Doctor, Olinca Trejo N.D. I did this program right along with my clients and chronicled my journey daily.

Not only did I lose 9 lb in a month (even though that was not a goal for me) I found out that yes, I am gluten-intolerant. The tips I will be sharing are from my own personal experiences and my education as I learn more about why most people should at least take a look at reducing the amount of wheat and gluten foods in their diets.

My first tip is very simple:

The best way to find out if you are truly sensitive or intolerant to gluten is to completely cut it out of your diet for 1 month. Make sure you do this with guidance!

Many people are now trying to go “gluten-free” and I do think that it’s ok for most people to try this but you have to make sure that you are aware of what to do and that you are still getting the proper nutrition from your food and of course taking the right supplements to support digestion, detox and your immune system as all of these are affected by gluten intake. And if you suspect you have celiac disease, please consult with your primary medical practitioner first, as there is testing to be done and you have to still be eating gluten for these tests.
