Forget New Year’s Resolutions – let’s start with the most simple of things: setting the tone for the year by choosing a word or short phrase to focus on. Last year, I chose SERVICE as my word of the year. And it made a difference in everything that I did, because it was easy to remember and easy to put into place. I truly feel as though I am a more servant leader after one year of focus on it.

It’s been great to see so many people choosing a word of the year on social media. The challenge is will you continue to focus on this word once the luster of a shiny new year has worn off? In this post I’ll share a few simple tips to make sure that you keep your word top of mind all the way into December.

What is my choice for 2017? MINDFUL. This word is very powerful and a great reminder to be present. It’s an adjective that simply means to be ‘conscious or aware of something.‘ Being mindful will also help me to achieve my goals for 2017. Here’s how:

  • Being mindful of what I’m putting into my mouth = helps me to let go of my sugar addiction
  • Being mindful of time spent on revenue generating activities = helps me to grow my business
  • Being mindful when I’m with my family = helps me to be more present when I’m with my husband & daughter and give them my full attention
  • Being mindful of who I’m spending my time with = helps me to surround myself with those who will lift me up and push me out of my comfort zone for growth

What are some simple strategies to make sure you apply your word in 2017? First, write it down! Include the definition and post it in several places in your home so that you see it on a daily basis. I chose the mirror in my bedroom and my business binder cover.

Next, remind yourself daily. If you have a prayer habit, include your word in your prayers. For example, Lord help me to be more mindful today. Last year (and I am continuing this year) I woke up and said  I am grateful for this gift of another day and the opportunity to be of service to others.

And finally, use the word as often as possible during the day. I started asking my clients how could I best be of service to them. At the beginning of the year, it sounded a little weird, but by the end of the year, it’s natural and feels good for me to ask that question.

I’d love to hear from you! Did you have a word of the year for 2016? How did that work for you? Have you decided on a word of the year for 2017? Or maybe a theme instead? Share in the comments here or on the Facebook post.
