As a follow up to my last blog on the importance of focus, I wanted to focus on this question today: What do you DO? Last month, I attend a great event for the Defyeneurs, called The Tank with hosts Gerry Visca and Angela Kontgen. Gerry brought up a good point – when you first meet someone at a party, an event or pretty much anywhere, the first question after your name is: What do you DO? He went on to say that when you ask him that question you may be there a while; I often feel the same way, does anyone else agree?
We are often asked to put ourselves into a box, label ourselves with a profession or job but for many of us who are entrepreneurs, it’s not as simple as that. Successful entrepreneurs may have several things that they have become very good at doing and each of these things have allowed them to reach their current level of success, so it can be tempting to go into all of these when we first meet someone.
What I like about Gerry and Angela is that they challenge us to ask different questions. Why not change the question? A few suggestions to replace What do you DO? would be:
- What brings you here today?
- How do you spend your days?
- What are you most passionate about?
- Would you be open to sharing a recent success with me?
I know that many people I work with really struggle with the question What do you DO? because it’s not as simple as I’m a personal trainer or I’m a naturopath. Even when you can label your profession, is that really what you DO?
My challenge for you today is two-fold: First, instead of asking someone What do you DO? use a different question to engage in conversation. Second, as you will still be on the receiving end of What do you DO? on a regular basis, I encourage you to focus on what it is that you do BEST and what makes you different – and put it into a concise answer. Here’s mine:
My name is Julie Boyer, my business is Inspire. Act. Change. I inspire people to take action and make changes in their lives starting with daily gratitude.
Finally, I’m excited to announce that for my next book project I will be working with Angela and Gerry on the third season of the Defyeneurs, Live Your Why. This book will be a collaboration of authors, many whom I have worked with very closely, sharing their WHY and their passions. I have the incredible opportunity to write the wrap up and review at the end. I invite the other authors to share What they DO in the comments below.
