Long title for the blog today: What Has To Change For You To Achieve The Life Your Dream Of? But a very good question. I encourage all of us to be happy right where we are and find gratitude in our current everyday lives, yet at the same time strive to create our best lives, so that when the future arrives (and hopefully it will), we are exactly where we want to be.
Gratitude Tip: Do you realize that you have the power to create and design your life, starting today? When we look at others around us who are succeeding and living their dreams lives, we often get caught up in jealousy or saying how ‘lucky’ they are to be where they are. In truth, all successful people made a conscious choice to design their life. They made changes to their current situation and daily habits so that they could end up where they are today. And they likely faced a lot of challenges along the way, but unlike the majority, they continued towards their dreams in spite of the challenges that showed up.
Take a close look at where you are right now. Are you where you want to be? If the answer is YES – fantastic! Focus on your daily gratitude practice and living from a place of kindness and love, and being of service to others every day. If the answer is NO – do all of the above AND everyday take one action to get closer where you want to be. To paraphrase Jim Rohn, in order for things to change, you have to change. One of the comments I have been hearing from some of my business partners is how much I have changed over the past year (in a good way), which is what has allowed me to reach a new level of success in my business and also as a leader. Change is good – and even though many of us fear change – when we are the ones consciously making the decision to change, we are more in control of our lives than ever.
For many people, there are two things holding them back from truly living the life that they desire – a lack of time and a lack of money. Being a veteran of the direct sales industry, I want to share with the you truth about what it takes to actually overcome the time and money barriers most people face. There are many misunderstandings about how our profession works.
First, the concept that it’s easy money and you can quickly replace a full-time income, working part-time on your side business. There are only a few instances where I have seen this happen: when someone comes into a company with previous SUCCESS in another company and a network that follows them OR someone who has created an extensive network of people who know and trust them BEFORE they started in direct sales, and are willing to listen to them about their new business venture. The reality is that it’s going to take hard work, dedicating 5-10 hours a week on revenue generating activities to create a solid income. And at first, you won’t be earning much on your efforts at all and it will seem as though the business model doesn’t work. This is why many people will choose a direct sales model that is a party plan because you’re earning more commissions right off the bat. The challenge with a party plan model is that you’ve got to have inventory on hand and you’re out doing parties all of the time so you’re taking more and more time away from your family the bigger your business grows.
So how do you overcome the time and money barrier in direct sales? Choose a company that has a consumable product, that people will purchase month after month because it’s making a difference in their lives. Dedicate at least one full year of 5-10 hours a week of revenue generating activities – which are inviting, presenting, following up, enrolling and getting new people started/supporting new customers. And learn the difference between these two important concepts:
Residual income: This is income that is created when you have a customer base that is ordering products again and again on a monthly basis – based on your efforts from the initial order and subsequent support. To create a residual income, you’ll need to be partnered with a company that has a consumable product and a monthly auto order program. This stream of income is great as a 2nd stream of revenue for entrepreneurs in a linear income business, i.e. life coach, massage therapist, chiropractor, writer, spa owner/esthetician for example. This is how you overcome the MONEY barrier, because you’re no longer limited to trading your hours for dollars in a one time transaction.
Leverage: This income is created when you build a team. Most direct sales business models will allow you to build a team and earn a percentage of your income through the sales of your team members. One of the reasons I chose USANA is that their compensation plan allows you to reach down and earn on unlimited levels, many other plans limit earnings to 5-7 levels deep. When you build a team and mentor and develop leaders on your team, that’s when you can overcome the TIME barrier. This is the most challenging part of this business model and it’s also what makes it the most powerful. If you are currently an employee, you are providing leverage for the company owner. It’s up to you to decide, do you want to be leverage for someone else, or would you like to create leverage?
The reason I’ve been able to create a life that I love is via the power of these two concepts. There is no secret to my success. Hard work, combined with two powerful business concepts = success. I realize that many of you will have skipped this part of the blog (you’re probably not even reading this!) because of a bias you’ve got again this business model. If you’re open to learning about it, and open to taking the first step to creating your BEST life – take action NOW.
