What is Your Word of The Year?
Have you heard of this before? As the new year approaches, if you could only pick one word that the would be the focus for all of 2016, what would that word be? Although I have known about this for many years, I have never fully committed to a word of the year – until now.
Gratitude Tip: What is the underlying theme for your goals and vision in 2016? What word would drive you to make the right decisions and to encourage growth and success? Gratitude could be the obvious choice for many of us. Is there something deeper? If you were to build your home on one word, what would that strong foundation word be?
Service – The act of helping or being of service to others. It is my desire to become a servant leader in 2016: Robert Greenleaf says, “the servant-leader is servant first.” By that he meant that that the desire to serve, the “servant’s heart,” is a fundamental characteristic of a servant-leader. It is not about being servile, it is about wanting to help others. It is about identifying and meeting the needs of colleagues, customers, and communities.
I am accustomed to being a leader first. This comes naturally to me and has been both a positive and negative trait in my life. I have been striving to become a more servant-leader for many years, inspired by my mentors including John C. Maxwell, Leanne Jacobs and Jordan Kemper. Being a leader first is about the ego. A servant-leader is about lifting up others and supporting their growth and success. Choosing Service as my word of the year for 2016 will help me to remember this.
Have you chosen a word of the year for 2016? Is this something you’ve done before? It can be a challenge to choose just one word and I encourage you to sit quietly to think about which word suits you best. However, don’t get too caught up in choosing the ‘perfect’ word for your year. I was thinking about my word last night before I went to bed. It came to me just as I started to write this blog post. I’d love to hear from you on Facebook, which word have you chosen?
