What’s Holding You Back From Trying Something New?
When was the last time you tried something new? We all live by our routines and it’s not that often that we get the chance to try something new. And often, when presented with something new, our fear gets in the way of us giving it a try.
Gratitude Tip: When you’re given the option to try something new, do you jump at the opportunity or are you letting fear get in the way? More often than not, once we give it a try, our fears tend to disappear and we end up being grateful for the experience.
Yesterday I tried something that I had been wanting to do for at least a decade. I went to an adult ballet class (not a barre class, but a class with actual classical ballet). What had been keeping me from before was a fear that it would hurt my foot (old Ironman injury) or that I would end up injuring myself. The great thing is, neither of these happened and I LOVED IT!!
I danced a bit as a teenager and young adult but ballet isn’t something I have much experience with. It’s probably been 20 years since I did a fitness or dance class of any kind. I have decided to register for the session.
There were two things that also helped me make my decision: First, my husband and I had been talking about our fall activities, he has volleyball starting up and my daughter is in a hip hop class. Dan was encouraging me to do something for me because as he put it, ‘I’m a wife, mother and business woman but I don’t really do anything for me.’ I reflected on that, and agreed. It’s been a few years since I did something just for me (that wasn’t business related). The second was the realization that I do have time for a one hour class during the day. After doing my time-study last week (I’m doing it again this week), I realize that I do have time to include some leisure/exercise in my schedule.
What’s holding you back from doing something new? What excuse are you using? I encourage you to try it – even if you’re afraid. And then let me know if you end up being grateful after.
And a huge welcome to all of you who are reading this blog for the first time! This is the first day of The Gratitude Project blog posts that is going out to all who are subscribed to the Live Daily Gratitude emails. I’m looking forward to your comments and feedback.
